Roddy McKendree Memorial Camp Fund

We are writing on behalf of Cue Camp Virginia to announce the establishment of the Roddy McKendree Memorial Camp Fund. This fund is being setup to provide ongoing financial resources in direct support of the annual Cue Camp Virginia.

Since the beginning of Cue Camp Virginia in 1990, originally organized by 3 families (Gonsoulins, McKendrees and Schulers) in need of support and education for their deaf and hard of hearing children, funding sources have been varied. Northern Virginia Cued Speech Association has done a tremendous service to the deaf community and families by continuing to provide the Cue Camp Virginia experience.

Invented at Gallaudet University in 1968, Cued Speech (CS) is a manual system used to provide clear and unambiguous access to spoken language, allowing deaf/hard of hearing children to develop language and literacy at the rate of their hearing peers.

There remains a clear need for monies to support the Volunteer deaf and hard of hearing college students/young adults and families that need financial support to be able to participate in Camp. Early on we determined the essential value of having young deaf/HH adults to volunteer in all phases of the camp, to provide mentoring and role modeling. We also know the financial burden on families for services and hearing equipment can keep a family from being able to come to camp.

Roddy always had the pleasure of working with the Volunteer young adults and cueing Dads to provide the best recreation possible each year at Camp. To sustain this extraordinary program, we would like to ask you to donate to the Roddy McKendree Memorial Camp Fund (RMMCF). Any contribution will be greatly appreciated by parents and children who will attain life-changing benefits from the use of Cued Speech.

This year, the 21st Annual Cue Camp Virginia @ Jamestown 4H Center, is being held Sept 29 through Oct 2, 2011.

Thank you for considering a donation to Cue Camp Virginia!

Sincerely,

The McKendree Family (Susanna, Juli & Will)
